West Nile Virus Outbreak
As of this week, 47 states have reported cases of West Nile and
Oklahoma is among the list with the highest totals!
Have you taken precautions to protect your family and animals? Here are some helpful tips and information for keeping you and your pets safe.
Eliminate standing water
Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Check around your house and make sure bird baths, flower pots, etc are cleared of water often. Mosquitoes already threatening your home? Swaims carries a product called Mosquito Dunks that are placed in standing water to kill mosquitoes.
Use repellent when going outside
This means your family, dogs, cats and horses! Use a product that is specifically labeled for mosquitoes and reapply as needed. A brand new product called Centaura was just released this year to protect both horse and rider from mosquitoes and flies. We have already heard some very positive reviews! Although it is not as common for dogs and cats to get West Nile, they are still not immune from catching the virus. Also, mosquitoes are a carrier of heartworms. There are several repellents like K9 Advantix as well as sprays that are labeled for repelling mosquitoes on dogs.
Vaccinate
Be sure to vaccinate your horses annually and give a repeat booster if it is the first time your horse has been vaccinated. There is currently no vaccine for dogs, cats or humans so it is very important that we take precautions seriously.
